The BP Oil Spill Court Supervised Settlement Program began accepting claims in June 2012. Businesses, property owners and individuals located in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi or Florida (click here for a list of eligible Florida counties) may be eligible to participate in the program if they suffered financial losses or personal injuries due to the Deepwater Horizon disaster and its aftermath. Those eligible to participate include:
- Businesses and individuals employed in the Gulf of Mexico Seafood industry, including seafood processors, shrimpers, oystermen, and commercial fishermen.
- Owners of condominiums, vacation homes, marshland, or any property along the Gulf of Mexico coastline. Through the Court Supervised Settlement Program, Gulf Coast property owners may be able to receive compensation for property damage, diminution in value, and loss of enjoyment.
- Vessels of Opportunity Participants may be able to receive compensation for any damage done to their boat or other property; health problems stemming from exposure to dispersants or oil; or BP’s failure to pay fairly.
- Tourism-related businesses, including restaurants, hotels, vacation rentals, and others that suffered decreased revenues due to the BP oil spill.
- Employees of any business who had hours cut or tips reduced due to the effect the BP oil spill had on their employer’s business.
- Clean-up workers who suffered health problems because of exposure to oil and dispersants.
