CAT CT Scan Radiation Overdose | Lawsuits, Lawyers | Side Effects: Organ Damage, Cancer, Hair-loss, Headaches, Skin Reddening | Dangerous Radiation Adverse Affects
Have you suffered from hair loss or skin reddening following a CT perfusion scan of the brain? If so, there is a good chance you were the victim of a dangerous radiation overdose. CT scan machines manufactured by General Electric and Toshiba are at the center of a nationwide probe into such radiation overdoses. More than 200 people who underwent CT brain scans at medical facilities in California, Alabama and Missouri are known to have been injured in this way. It is very likely that more cases in other states will surface as the investigation continues.
If you received one of these botched CT scans, you are at risk for a number of long-term health problems, including organ failure and cancer. The makers of these CT scan machines and the medical facilities where these procedures were performed need to be held accountable for the pain and suffering they have caused.
Our CT scan injury lawyers are investigating possible lawsuits on behalf of anyone who suffered a radiation overdose and radiation poisoning as a result of one of these procedures. If you were injured in this way, you may be eligible to receive compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering, as well as medical monitoring for long-term health problems related to radiation poisoning. To protect your legal rights, we urge you to contact one of our CT scan injury lawyers today.
CT Scan Radiation Overdose Incidents
CT scans work by producing three-dimensional images of the inside of the human body by using X-rays taken from different viewpoints surrounding the human body. The procedure requires that patients be exposed to radiation. If a CT scan machine is not calibrated correctly, radiation overdose may result.
According to a series of Food & Drug Administration (FDA) alerts issued in late 2009, CT scan machines made by General Electric and Toshiba were not set at correct levels at several medical centers in different parts of the country. This allowed patients to receive more than 8 times the appropriate dose of radiation during CT perfusion scans of the brain. It is not yet known if human error or a machine malfunction caused this problem.
At least 260 patients were injured in this way at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. CT scan machines there had been set at the higher level since February 2008, but went undetected for 18 months. It wasn't until patients began complaining of hair loss and skin reddening that the error was found.
According to various media reports, the FDA was also investigating 10 incidents at Glendale Adventist Medical Center and an unknown number of cases at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California. An unnamed Huntsville, Alabama hospital was also the site of reports, the agency said.
The scanners used at Cedars-Sinai and Glendale Adventist were made by General Electric, while those used at other facilities included more than one Toshiba model.
Patients who received these radiation overdoses now face an increased susceptibility to a variety of health problems that are caused by radiation poisoning. These include organ damage and cancer. Unfortunately, it could be years before these radiation overdose illnesses become apparent.
Legal Help for Victims of CT Scan Radiation Overdoses
Already, lawsuits have been filed against GE Healthcare and the medical facilities implicated in these radiation overdoses. These lawsuits are seeking compensation for patients' medical bills and other expenses, as well as funds to monitor individuals over the long-term for health problems associated with radiation poisoning. If you or a loved one were the victim of such a CT scan radiation overdose, you may be eligible to file a similar lawsuit.
