ABC News Investigates: Class Action Lawsuit Claims Product Has Caused Devastating Problems
A lot of my clients were complaining of symptoms and go to their doctors, and the doctors will simply ignore them; they are unaware of the zinc poisoning issues. Fixodent Zinc Poisoning
Fixodent zinc poisoning has been seen in people who use excessive amounts of the denture cream to keep poor fitting dentures in place. Because Procter & Gamble, the maker of Fixodent, for years failed to warn consumers of this zinc poisoning risk, people who used Fixodent in this way had no idea they were putting their health at risk.
The recommended amounts of zinc are 11 mg per day for men and 8 mg per day for women. Anything over 40 mg per day is potentially dangerous. Chronic exposure to excessive amounts of zinc will eventually lead to copper depletion, neurological injuries, and even neuropathy.
- weakness and numbness in the extremities
- tingling or burning sensations in the hands and feet
- balance and coordination problems
- vomiting, fever, and rashes
Long-term effects of zinc poisoning can vary from moderate to severe. This includes permanent neurological damage and even death. Recovery depends on the amount of zinc consumed, the time of exposure and how quickly treatment was sought.
In August 2008, a study in the peer reviewed journal “Neurology” reported on four patients suffering from neuropathy and other neurological symptoms typical of zinc poisoning and copper depletion. The article specifically linked excessive exposure to zinc in denture cream to “profound neurologic disease” in the patients reviewed. Since that report was published, hundreds of people have filed suit against the makers of zinc denture creams like Fixodent in order to obtain compensation for their injuries.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has not issued a consumer warning regarding the risk of zinc poisoning from Fixodent and other dentures creams. However, in a February 2011 letter to denture cream makers, the FDA recommended that they take actions to mitigate the risks of denture cream zinc poisoning, including possibly replacing zinc with a safer ingredient.
In 2010, Procter & Gamble did alter its label to include a caution about overuse of the product. But unfortunately, Fixodent is still made with zinc and continues to pose a serious public health threat.
