Patients with stroke may be weak throughout their body (global paralysis) or have hemiplegia (weakness on one side of the body) or other patterns of paralysis depending on the area of damage in the brain. Lower spinal cord damage from a severe back injury may result in paraplegia.
Paraplegia is paralysis of the lower part of the body, most frequently affecting both legs and often-internal organs below the waist. Paraplegia is caused by an injury or disease that damages the spinal cord, and thus affects both sides of the body. Damage to the lowest area of the spinal cord may result only in paralysis of the legs, where on the other hand damage higher up can cause possible loss of control over the muscles of the bladder and rectum as well or, if the injury is even higher, paralysis of all four limbs and loss of control over the muscles involved in breathing.
Injuries that fully sever the spinal cord or damage some of the nervous tissue in the cord are the main contributors of paralysis.
Quadriplegia is a loss of one’s ability to move and/or feel both arms, legs, and the parts of the body below the area of injury to the spinal cord. Quadriplegia is generally caused by an injury to the spinal cord. Quadriplegia most often occurs when a spinal cord injury falls between the 5th to 7th cervical vertebrae (bones in the neck that make up part of the structure surrounding the spinal cord). The 5th to 7th cervical vertebrae are located in the neck area.
The explanation why spinal cord injuries in this area cause quadriplegia is because the spinal cord cannot send messages below the area where it is seriously damaged. Motor vehicle accidents, motorcycle accident, gunshot wounds, and falls can cause quadriplegia
