Super Poligrip Zinc Poisoning

The health risks posed by excessive exposure to zinc have been known for years, and were known when Super Poligrip products first came on the market. Some denture wearers who use Super Poligrip or similar denture adhesives may be exposed to an estimated 330 mg of zinc daily. The recommended daily allowance of zinc is less than 8mg for women and 11 mg for men, with the maximum tolerable intake set at 40 mg.

Symptoms of zinc poisoning include:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling or pain
  • A "pins and needles" sensation
  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of Balance
  • Difficulty walking
  • Paralysis

Super Poligrip zinc poisoning injuries can be severe enough to cause life-long disability. In the worst cases, zinc poisoning can lead to death if it goes untreated.

Many people who now suffer from Super Poligrip zinc poisoning used large amounts of denture cream on a daily basis to keep poor fitting dentures in place. Unfortunately, Super Poligrip was sold for years without any warning label detailing the health risk posed by excessive exposure to zinc.

In May 2011, various media outlets reported that Glaxo had settled scores of Super Poligrip zinc poisoning lawsuits for millions of dollars. According to a Bloomberg report, unidentified sources claimed the Poligrip zinc poisoning settlements averaged more than $1 million apiece, and totaled around $120 million. The per-case average settlement reflected the seriousness of the injuries sustained by alleged victims of Super Poligrip zinc poisoning, legal experts said.
