Defective Jeld-Wen Windows
Jeld-Wen Windows Class Action Lawsuit Alleges Defects Cause Visual Distortion, Water Leakage, Premature Wood Rot
If you’ve been having problems with your Jeld-Wen windows, you are not the only one. Many homeowners allege that their Jeld-Wen windows are not performing as promised. In fact, a number of homeowners report that the windows have alleged defects from visual distortions to problems with sealing and water leakage. Dealing with these defects may end up costing the homeowner money. Our firm is actively investigating a class action lawsuit on behalf of Jeld-Wen window consumers.
Homeowners Report Numerous Defects with Jeld-Wen Windows
There have been several reported issues with Jeld Wen’s “Low E” windows. According to many builders and homeowners, there is a visual distortion when you look on either side of the window. When you are on the outside looking it, there is reflective distortion. If you are on the inside looking out, there is said to be indoor illumination, which is a mirror-like reflection. But visual distortion isn’t the only problem; allegedly, the windows amplify sunlight so intensely that it can melt the siding of an adjacent structure and cause damage to other nearby structures and plants. Allegedly, this defect comes from the built-in reflective qualities of the window that are supposed to help retain heat inside and protect interior furniture from fading. According to a number of people who actually have these windows however, they do just the opposite. Not only do homeowners have to deal with replacing the windows, they may also have to spend thousands of dollars replacing damaged furnishings and other structures as well.
Jeld-Wen windows may also have problems with sealing and water intrusion. Reports suggest that the seals of the windows are breaking, which allows water leakage. As a result of this alleged defect, there may be premature rotting wood frames, foggy windows and interior home damage.
Jeld-Wen has Money Troubles, Fail to Honor Warranty
News reports suggest that Jeld-Wen, Inc. has had a rocky financial road in recent years. In 2006, the Oregon-based manufacturer reached $720 million in assets. By 2011, this dropped dramatically to $335 million, BrightScope says. These money troubles have affected employees’ pension plans and investors, but there are strong suspicions that it has impacted their workmanship as well.
As if the reported defects were not trouble enough, Jeld-Wen has allegedly been failing to honor its warranties. On their website, the company “promises reliability for life”, but homeowners say that they have not been living up to these claims. In their warranty for wood and metal-clad wood windows, Jeld-Wen says “… we warrant that if your JELD-WEN Product exhibits a [window] defect in material or workmanship within twenty (20) years from the date of manufacture, we will, at our option, repair, replace or refund the purchase price of the Product or component part. Skilled labor (where deemed necessary by us) to repair or replace components is provided for two (2) years (unless specified otherwise)." The warranty is similar for aluminum and vinyl windows, except that the warranty is 10 years from the date of manufacture.
