iOS 4 Issues
Apple unveiled iOS 4 in tandem with the iPhone 4 during the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference event. It is available as a free upgrade for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G. It is also included with the new iPhone 4. The new operating system was introduced to provide some level of feature parity with Google's Android operating system.
iOS 4 was called “the most advanced mobile operating system in the world" by Apple CEO Steve Jobs. iOS 4 included 100 new features and 1,500 new APIs, highlighted by the introduction of multitasking, folders, a unified inbox and expanded search options.
Unfortunately, iPhone 3G users soon found that the experience provided by iOS 4 was far below what Apple had promised. Their complaints soon began surfacing to technology blogs and message boards.
Commenting to one ComputerWorld.com blog, a reader complained of "slow response, applications crashing repeatedly, typing in apps like iFitness taking forever, text message response unbearably slow etc. etc." The same commenter went on to say: "My experience has been bad enough that I probably will not get another iPhone even though I was a huge iPhone advocate prior to this latest release. I am actively looking for a replacement.
Another reader of the same blog wrote: "I never would have upgraded had I been aware of the consequences. I loved my iPhone and recommended many friends to buy it. Now I want to throw mine against a brick wall.
Complaints on the Apple forum are similar: "Unlocking the phone sometimes takes 5-10 seconds and the home screen icons literally stop converging halfway through and then 2 seconds later, finish off. Other things are ridiculously slow, such as opening and replying to texts. Good one Apple, maybe you want us all to upgrade to the iPhone 4 so that OS4 actually runs at a manageable speed?
According to Wired.com, the Apple thread relating to iPhone 3G’s slow performance on the iOS 4 at one point reach 38 pages and had more than 560 messages. Wired also pointed to what the problem might be: The iPhone 3G has a 412 MHz ARM 11 chip, while the 3GS model uses a 600MHz ARM 11 processor. "Clearly, the difference computing power seems to have an impact on how well the device can handle iOS 4," Wired said.
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, the most common criticism is that the phone is slow after the upgrade. There are also many complaints that the phone drains the battery quickly and becomes excessively hot, the report said. In many cases, iPhone 3G users have said the upgrade renders their phones practically useless.
The Journal article also pointed out that it is not easy to downgrade to the old operating system when an iOS 4 upgrade has gone badly. Some blogs have instructions, but those aren’t supported by Apple. The only real option is to restore the phone to factory settings, but that removes information the user has already stored on the phone, the Journal said.
According to the Journal, one tech blog, the Mobile Gadgeteer on ZDNet said Apple should advise against upgrading the iPhone 3G. The Unofficial Apple Weblog told readers who hadn’t upgraded yet: “DON’T UPDATE YOUR iPHONE 3G TO iOS 4!
On July 29, Apple confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that it was investigating reports that some users upgrading their older iPhones to iOS 4 have seen their iPhone become - in the words of one user - "a shiny brick.
