If you have used Super Poligrip products and suffer from neuropathy or unexplained neurological problems, your denture cream could be to blame. Up until 2010, several Super Poligrip denture creams - Super Poligrip Original, Ultra Fresh and Extra Care - contained zinc. Used chronically in excessive amounts, zinc-containing denture cream can result in serious, debilitating, and even deadly neurological problems.

GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of Super Poligrip, has already spent millions to settle Super Poligrip zinc poisoning lawsuits. If you or a loved one developed neurological injures because of Super Poligrip, you may be able to obtain compensation. ABC News Investigates: Class Action Lawsuit Claims Product Has Caused Devastating Problems

6/27/ WFAA-TV|Dallas/Fort Worth - Health News - Zinc danger remains in denture paste

A lot of my clients were complaining of symptoms and go to their doctors, and the doctors will simply ignore them; they are unaware of the zinc poisoning issues. They are unaware that these products even contain zinc," said Andy part of a team of attorneys representing more than 100 plaintiffs in a mass tort. Super Poligrip Zinc Poisoning

The health risks posed by excessive exposure to zinc have been known for years, and were known when Super Poligrip products first came on the market. Some denture wearers who use Super Poligrip or similar denture adhesives may be exposed to an estimated 330 mg of zinc daily. The recommended daily allowance of zinc is less than 8mg for women and 11 mg for men, with the maximum tolerable intake set at 40 mg.

Symptoms of zinc poisoning include:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling or pain
  • A "pins and needles" sensation
  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of Balance
  • Difficulty walking
  • Paralysis

Super Poligrip zinc poisoning injuries can be severe enough to cause life-long disability. In the worst cases, zinc poisoning can lead to death if it goes untreated.

Many people who now suffer from Super Poligrip zinc poisoning used large amounts of denture cream on a daily basis to keep poor fitting dentures in place. Unfortunately, Super Poligrip was sold for years without any warning label detailing the health risk posed by excessive exposure to zinc.

Since a 2008 report in the journal “Neurology” linked excessive exposure to zinc in denture creams like Super Poligrip to severe neurological problems, hundreds of people have filed lawsuits against Glaxo. In 2010, Glaxo decided to stop selling Super Poligrip products, citing reports of neurological injuries possibly associated to excessive exposure to zinc. The products have since been reformulated to be zinc-free and have returned to the market. Unfortunately, by the time Glaxo finally acted, an untold number of people had already been exposed to dangerous amounts of zinc thanks to Super Poligrip.

In May 2011, various media outlets reported that Glaxo had settled scores of Super Poligrip zinc poisoning lawsuits for millions of dollars. According to a Bloomberg report, unidentified sources claimed the Poligrip zinc poisoning settlements averaged more than $1 million apiece, and totaled around $120 million. The per-case average settlement reflected the seriousness of the injuries sustained by alleged victims of Super Poligrip zinc poisoning, legal experts said.

Jun 28, 2010 | Parker Waichman LLP
Scores of denture wearers who have suffered unexplained neurological injuries are now only beginning to realize that zinc-containing denture creams could be to blame for their ailments. The human body does need zinc – but only in small amounts. Studies...
