On May 5, 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) verified 102 cases of fungal keratitis infections in contact lens wearers who use ReNu with MoistureLoc. The number of confirmed Fusarium keratitis cases has risen by 16 since the CDC last reported statistics. Additionally, the CDC stated there are 12 cases of possible infection and 81 other cases being examined.
As of May 2, 2006, the CDC has gathered full information on 58 of 86 Fusarium cases, and that 56 of the 58 persons with infections had reported wearing contact lenses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also had 15 reports of individuals using ReNu MultPlus.
To date, MultiPlus is still on store shelves and is a more commonly used then MoistureLoc. Bausch & Lomb has been offering free MultiPlus to MoistureLoc customers, has defended MultiPlus and declared the reported infection cases do not match the products nearly 40% U.S. market share.
On April 10, 2006, Bausch & Lomb announced suspension of shipments of its contact solution ReNu with MoistureLoc. Reports of fungal keratitis infections in users of the solution are surfacing in contact lens wearers who use ReNu with MoistureLoc.
Fungal keratitis
Fungal keratitis is a serious eye infection that can develop through the whole depth of the cornea. The infection can require prolonged drug therapy with antifungals such as natamycin, nystatin, and amphotericin B. Other antifungals that may be administered include various Azoles and Fluorinated pyrimidines. If drugs do not work and the eye is damaged, surgery may be necessary to remove fungal ulcers/lesions. Warning signs of fungal keratitis include eye pain, eye discomfort, decrease in vision and light hypersensitivity.
FDA Recall
On May 15, 2006, Bausch & Lomb permanently recalled its contact solution ReNu with MoistureLoc. The FDA and CDC have been investigating an increase in cases of fungal keratitis, an eye infection that affects the cornea and can cause permanent blindness.
