Third Generation DES Linked to Serious Health Problems

Third generation DES (offspring of DES Daughters and Sons) can suffer from serious health problems; such as reproductive tract problems). Third generation DES injuries are associated with preterm labor or deliveries resulting in premature birth and cerebral palsy, blindness or other neurological deficits or death of a child. Researchers are currently examining the effects of DES exposure on the grandchildren of women prescribed DES while pregnant.

A number of animal studies conducted by Dr. R.H. Kaufamn in 2002 revealed increased tumor rates in third-generation mice as they age. A small clinical study did not find evidence of structural reproductive abnormalities in 28 DES granddaughters. A larger survey is under way to determine if there are increased risks of reproductive problems and cancer. The findings of Klip and associates (2002), who studied the sons of a Dutch cohort of women who had been exposed to DES in utero, suggested that these sons may have an increased risk of hypospadias; however, further study is necessary.

One DES Daughter had a child who, and at the age of four years, had such a severe case of cerebral palsy that the child was unable to turn himself over; the cerebral palsy was linked to the DES exposure of the mother.

In a 2003 issue of the Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology an additional study found DES to be transgenerational, meaning that the maternal grandmother had taken DES while pregnant but the mother did not experience any health problems associated with the DES exposure. This was recognized when a rare tumor was discovered on a 15-year-old girl.
