Ulcerative colitis is a condition that causes inflammation and ulceration of the lining of the large intestine also known as the Colon; Colitis is the inflammation of colon. Those who suffer from ulcerative colitis experience swelling along with ulcers located in the colon and rectum. Ulcerative colitis is included under an umbrella term called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
The inflammation associated with ulcerative colitis quite often occurs in the rectum and lower part of the colon, but it may affect the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis in frequently affects the small intestine except for the lower section, called the ileum.
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease and is infamous for its waxing and waning nature. It is estimated that in Unites states alone there are approximately one million people who suffer from some form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Roughly half of the people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease have ulcerative colitis and the other half suffer from Crohn's disease.
Ulcerative colitis affects people of all ages, but at large it is the disease of young adults. Most cases of Ulcerative colitis are diagnosed in people between the ages 15 to 40 years. Additionally, children as small as few months’ old and older people can develop the disease.
Symptoms of Ulcerative colitis include: Diarrhea; Blood in the stools; Nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain or cramps; Fever, fatigue, loss of appetite; Constipation; Loss of water and nutrients. Additionally, people who have Ulcerative colitis may also encounter Extra-intestinal complications including: arthritis; skin lesions including skin rash; eye inflammations and liver diseases.
