Wright Medical Hip Implant Verdicts

A number of lawsuits have been filed against Wright Medical Technology over the company's allegedly defective hip implants. The devices are supposed to last at least 15 years; however, plaintiffs implanted with Wright hip implants allege that they were defectively designed and resulted in complications. More than 1,000 lawsuits have been filed over injuries allegedly caused by the company's hip replacements. In June 2015, Wright lost the first verdict in a trial over its Profemur R device.

Jury Orders Wright to Pay $4.5 Million

A Los Angeles jury ordered Wright to pay $4.5 million to a man implanted with the Profemur R hip implant. The plaintiff was standing in his kitchen in 2010 when the implant snapped, resulting in numerous complications and injuries. According to his lawsuit, he needed to undergo more than a dozen major surgeries. The injury led to a number of dislocations and infections, the plaintiff alleges.

The Profermur R hip implant is constructed with laser etchings that are used to help surgeons place the device correctly during surgery. The product liability lawsuit alleged that, because of these etchings, the implant became brittle and broke. Wright contended that the surgeon was to blame for the broken implant. The jury ruled that the hip device was defective, and awarded a total of $4.5 million to the plaintiff; $500,000 was awarded to the plaintiff's wife for loss of consortium and $4 million was awarded for past and future pain and suffering.

Most of the metal-on-metal hip implant lawsuits pending against Wright allege that the devices are defective because metal particles are released by the implant when its surfaces rub together. Many lawsuits involve Wright's Conserve hip implant. While the allegations in this particular case are different, the verdict may influence other cases, especially since the same witnesses are likely to be used.
