Accident Prevention Systems
As vehicle crash avoidance systems become more common in vehicles at all price levels, a growing body of data reveals that these systems constitute a highly effective tool for reducing accidents, collision-related injuries, and traffic fatalities. While these accident prevention systems differ in complexity, effectiveness, and cost, they offer significantly more protection than cars only equipped with more traditional safety features like airbags, seat belts, fenders, and reinforced passenger compartments. If you or a loved one is injured by a negligent driver, vehicle occupants could experience a serious injury, so you should speak to a knowledgeable attorney who represents injured car accident victims.
There are two main types of braking systems now being installed in vehicles that are referred to respectively as crash avoidance systems and crash mitigation systems. Crash avoidance systems have historically been limited to higher-end vehicles because of their complexity and cost while crash mitigation systems can be found in lower-priced vehicles.
Although both systems can help reduce the risk of accidents, a study conducted by AAA demonstrates the disparity in effectiveness between these two systems. Crash avoidance systems reduced vehicle speed by nearly double the amount of mitigation systems. Avoidance systems prevented accidents approximately 60 percent of the time whereas mitigation systems only prevented crashes 33 percent of the time. By way of example, vehicles confronted with a fixed object in the roadway moving at a rate of 45 mph reduced their speed by 74 percent when equipped with a crash avoidance system. Vehicles with only a crash mitigation braking system slowed by only 9 percent.
Although crash avoidance systems are not universal on new cars yet, they should be at some point in 2022 based on an agreement reached between the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), vehicle manufacturers, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While these forms of technology offer to make vehicle occupants and others using our roadways safer, no substitute exists for attentive drivers exercising diligence and caution. Even the best anti-crash technology can fail or malfunction, so motorists must remain vigilant rather than develop a false sense of security.
If you are involved in a collision despite your vehicle being equipped with anti-crash technology, you should speak to an experienced vehicle accident injury attorney to learn about your legal rights to financial compensation. Although your initial focus might be on your physical injuries and your recovery, strict deadlines limit the amount of time available to pursue a legal claim for compensation, so speak to an attorney at your earliest opportunity.
