EAST RUTHERFORD- According to nypost.com, an armored vehicle crashed in East Rutherford on Thursday, December 13, 2018, at about 8:30 in the morning. The truck was a Brinks security truck and when it crashed it covered the highway with cash. Reports indicate that people were stopping their vehicles on the highway to pick up the cash.
The people on the roadway slowed down traffic and caused multiple collisions.
Money floating around on the road is a rare form of distraction for drivers, but distracted driving is a common problem that plagues the roadways. The most well-known form of driver distraction is cell usage by drivers. However, there are many forms of driver distraction. Eating, changing a radio station, or speaking to other people in a vehicle are all forms of distracted driving that can take a person’s attention off the road.
Another form of distracted driving is rubbernecking. When a car accident happens, many people find it impossible to resist looking at the wreckage and the scene of the accident. It is important to remember to stay focused on the task at hand. In many cases, secondary crashes occur because drivers are looking at a crash scene and fail to notice vehicles slow down or stop in front of them.
Around 7 percent of crashes are caused by events outside of the vehicle causing distractions. Only cellphone use, and general distractions, as in daydreaming, cause more distracted driving-related car accidents.
It can be easy to become complacent about driving because it is something we do so frequently. It is important to remember that operating a vehicle requires caution and focus, no matter what is happening outside of the vehicle.
