TRIBECA, N.Y. — According to the Tribeca Patch, a Tribeca man died in a hit-and-run accident while walking in Forest Hills, Queens, New York. The Tribeca resident died on Sunday, November 11, 2018, shortly after he was hit at 5:30 p.m. New York City Police detectives made an arrest in the case. Notwithstanding, the particulars of the accident remain under investigation by NYPD accident reconstruction detectives and homicide investigators.
Police officers said that Niklas Ahern died while attempting to cross Continental Avenue near the intersection with Slocum Crescent in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens. The driver, later identified by police officers as 28-year-old Irving Duran of Ridgewood, took off from the crash scene after barreling over Ahern.
Emergency medical services technicians arrived at the scene of the crash to treat Ahern. They transported him to Long Island Jewish Forest Hills Hospital. Attending physicians in the emergency room declared Ahern deceased shortly after arrival.
The police investigators developed probable cause to believe that Duran committed the crime. Consequently, detectives arrested Duran in his Ridgewood home Monday, November 12, 2018, in the evening hours. Duran made his first court appearance on Tuesday where he faced charges of fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in death.
NYPD investigators did not reveal how they tracked Duran down. They will continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident. Additional charges could issue against Duran in the future if the circumstances allow.
Police did not say if they believe Duran was intoxicated or driving while distracted as he hit Ahern. Likewise, police did not say if they seized the sedan Duran was driving when he allegedly struck Ahern. However, common police investigative techniques would dictate that they would seize the car and examine it for traces of evidence left behind from the crash and take photographs of it as well.
