A news article posted on RD.com reports which auto manufacturers’ are involved in the most fatal traffic accidents. According to a study conducted by AutoInsurance.org, the number of fatal accidents may have more to do with the auto manufacturer’s brand’s popularity than safety.
Ford Motor Company is leading the way when it comes to fatal auto accidents. In the past three years, Ford motor vehicles have been involved in over 21,200 fatal accidents in the United States. This accounts for about 17% of all accidents in the accident data used to conduct the study. The Ford model that was in the most fatal accidents was the Ford F-150 pickup truck. The Ford F-150 pickup truck was involved in over 4,400 fatal accidents. However, the study suggests that Ford is not the auto brand that has the worst reputation for fatal accidents in the United States.
Chevrolet was second on the list with over 20,400 fatal accidents during the same time period. Toyota came in third place. However, the number of fatal accidents was a much lower number at around 12,900. Honda was fourth, and Dodge was fifth.
The study examined accident data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to conclude which auto brands were involved in the greatest percentage of fatal accidents. The researchers assessed the totals over a three-year duration and organized the list by the vehicle manufacturer.
The study notes that the motor vehicles topping the list “generally have a high number of owners.” The study researchers also adjusted the data to consider vehicle popularity, and they offer a separate fatal accident rate chart. The chart shows how many fatal accidents the top ten auto manufacturers had per 1,000 motor vehicles sold. The adjustment placed Dodge at the top of the list with 7.28.
