According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), both the Toyota Supra and the BMW Z4 are being recalled due to a potentially deadly mechanical defect involving fuel leaks, which could ignite and turn into a fast-spreading car fire or explosion. Although there are no reported injuries, burns, or deaths associate with the dangerous defect, these motor vehicles are new, and any unreported injuries or deaths connected to fuel leak defect may not be connected to the defect at this time. According to the NHTSA, this defect is of high importance and needs to be addressed immediately.
The recall notice is NHTSA Campaign Number 20V700000. According to the recall notice, the defect involves improperly welded fuel tanks of BMW Z4 autos manufactured between June 26, 2019, to July 9, 2020, and Toyota Supra cars built between April 19, 2019, to July 16, 2020. The NHTSA recall notice documents state that the weld joints between “two halves of the fuel tanks may not have been performed according to specifications.” The fuel tank welding integrity is uncertain, and therefore the possibility of a fuel leak and fire is probable. The NHTSA recall notice states that the only corrective action to take is to replace the car’s fuel tank. The fuel tank will also be replaced at no charge to the vehicle owners.
According to the NHTSA’s safety recall, no affected VIN was disclosed in the notice documents. However, all purchasers are asked to contact their local dealership to determine if their vehicle is part of the safety recall. The NHSTA states that affected owner notifications will occur on January 4, 2021.
