THE UNITED STATES – According to an online news report provided by caranddriver.com, General Motors has announced a recall of over 600,000 Sierra and Silverado pickup trucks and its Tahoe, Yukon, and Suburban sports utility vehicles (SUVs) due to a potential front center seatbelt assembly manufacturing defect. The seatbelt assembly recall will offer purchasers a free inspection of their vehicles and a repair of all defective front, center seatbelt assemblies. The General Motors seatbelt assembly recall only affects the following model years – 2019, 2020, and 2021.
The specific Models include:
According to General Motors, the defect does not affect the 2019 Silverado and Sierra Limited models built on the previous-generation platform.
The safety issue involves front seats that have the 40/20/40 split-folding front bench seat configuration. According to the defect report provided by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall does not affect trucks equipped with front bucket seats.
The defect report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that the safety issue concerns “improperly installed seatbelt brackets in the center of the front row” during manufacturing. The safety concern is that a passenger could be injured or killed in an accident when sitting in the front, center seat due to seatbelt failure during an accident or a hard braking situation.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s defect report says that passengers riding in the front center seat of the recalled vehicles might hear a rattling noise coming from the console or center seat area, or they might find the front, center seatbelt has become detached or is loose. General Motors stated that it would start notifying owners impacted by the recall on February 1, 2020. The letter would explain how to have the vehicle’s seatbelt assembly inspected, and the seatbelt brackets will be fixed if necessary.
Owners of General Motors Vehicles such as GMC and Chevrolet may review the NHTSA recall website to determine if their vehicle has any safety recalls.
