THE UNITED STATES – July 20, 2020 –Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the Italian-American motor company based in London, U.K., announced that the company must recall over 900,000 vehicles in circulation in the United States because of faulty airbag covers. According to an article published by FinancialWorld.org, 925,239 motor vehicles in the U.S. manufactured by the automotive giant need to be recalled because the airbag covers in older cars injured fourteen motorists. Although Fiat Chrysler did not disclose the extent of the injuries the fourteen people sustained, the company was quick to point out that exploding Takata airbags did not cause the injuries.
Fiat Chrysler announced that an internal investigation revealed fourteen people sustained various injuries because of defective airbag covers affixed to the steering wheel of certain Dodge and Chrysler cars. The company indicated that it would replace the airbag covers on its Dodge Nitro autos and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans from 2007 to 2011, as well as Chrysler Town & Country minivans from model years 2008 to 2010. Fiat Chrysler attributes defective airbag clips as the reason at least fourteen people sustained an injury attributed to a faulty airbag.
The article appearing on the FinancialWorld.org website did not say if the airbag clips failed when the airbag inflated in response to an emergency situation or when the vehicle was in normal operation. However, Fiat Chrysler pointed out that the company determined that clips holding the airbags together either came loose or fell apart over time, and as a result, an unexpected event occurred, leading to the driver’s injury.
Fiat Chrysler will notify customers and invite them to bring their vehicles to a certified Fiat Chrysler dealer for inspection and free repair, if necessary. FinancialWorld.org did not specify when the automaker might begin notifying its customers and start recall repairs. Anyone driving one of the recalled vehicles should be aware that an unexpected airbag inflation event could cause a crash that might cause significant personal injuries or death.
