Hyundai Tucson SUVs recall

THE UNITED STATES – September 14, 2020 – According to an online news report on BayNews9.com, Hyundai is warning owners of Tucson SUVs manufactured from 2019 to 2021 to park their SUVs outdoors due to a defect that can cause a computer electrical short that may cause the SUVs to “catch fire.” This is the second warning this month provided by Hyundai concerning electrical shorts with certain Tucson SUV model years.

This recall affects over 180,000 Tucson SUVs manufactured between 2019 through 2021. The Korean automaker states the defect involves a corrosion issue that can short circuit the SUV’s anti-lock brake circuit board, causing the board to catch on fire even when the ignition is turned off. So far, Hyundai has admitted there have been a dozen engine fires caused by the defect.

Hyundai recommends to all 2019 to 2021 Tucson SUV owners to disconnect the positive cable on the SUV’s battery if the anti-lock brake warning light turns on and then contact a Hyundai dealer for the repair and a loaner vehicle could be provided.

Kia has also recalled over 9,000 Stinger sports cars equipped with their 3.3-liter turbocharged engine due to the same defect. So far, Kia has reported six fires. Kia also stated that no reports of fires subsequent to the engines being turned off. However, Kia recommends parking the car outdoors until the repair has been made.

These two recalls are among the newest engine fire problems that have troubled Kia and Hyundai after investigations were initiated by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Hyundai stated that they would contact the affected Tucson SUV owners by mail starting around October 30, 2020. Tucson SUV owners may also enter in their SUV’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) at www.hyundaiusa.com/recalls to find out if their Tucson SUV is affected by the recall. Hyundai is investigating whether or not the recall will be expanded into other countries.
