Hyundai Tucson and Sonata Hybrid Fire Defects

According to an online news report on consumerreports.org, approximately 95,000 2017 Hyundai Tucson SUVs and Sonata Hybrid sedans are being recalled due to a defect that causes the aforementioned vehicle’s engines to suddenly stall or catch fire. The report states that Hyundai already has other open recalls for related fire issues.

Hyundai reported that the recall involves the vehicle’s connecting rod bearings. Connecting rod bearings assist in the proper rotation of the engine’s piston to move in and out of the cylinder. When the connecting rod bearings prematurely wear out, the oil pressure warning light will turn on and the engine will make a knocking sound. If the defect is not corrected, the engine can become damaged leading to engine stalls, increasing the chance of an accident. In some instances, the engine block becomes damaged causing an oil leak leading to a dangerous fire.

The article states that the following are warning signs:

  • Unusual knocking noises from the engine
  • Engine hesitation or reduced engine power
  • Check Engine warning light turns on
  • Engine oil pressure warning light turns on
  • Burning smell and/or smoke
  • Engine oil leaks

According to the NHTSA’s documentation, Hyundai knows of approximately 45 fires related to this recall. The recall involves over 13,000 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrids and 82,000 2017 Hyundai Tucsons.

Hyundai dealers will notify customers if their vehicles are affected by the recall and will inspect the engine. Should bearing damage be discovered, Hyundai will replace the vehicle’s engine. Moreover, Hyundai dealers will perform a software update. The total repairs will be performed free of charge. Hyundai stated that it will notify owners by mail starting on November 12, 2021. The NHTSA recall number is 21V727. Hyundai’s internal recall notice number is 209.
