According to a recall notice published on autoevolution.com, the Jaguar Land Rover group has announced a safety recall concerning its Land Rover Defender V8 seatbelts. The recall involves a defective Swedish-American front seatbelt pre-tensioner part manufactured by Autoliv. Autoliv has been involved in a large number of safety recalls. The Jaguar Land Rover recall campaign number is 22V-523.
On May 25, 2022, Autoliv notified Jaguar Land Rover of a defect it identified during the manufacturing process. The defective front seatbelt pre-tensioners were placed in certain Land Rover SUVs. According to the announcement, the defect involves a damaged front seatbelt pre-tensioner tube that was installed on the seatbelt’s retractor. This component does not permit the pre-tensioner to function correctly. Specifically, the seatbelt pre-tensioning does not function during an accident. The reduced or pre-tension failure increases the risk of injury during an accident.
Autoliv introduced the issue to the auto manufacturer’s Product Safety and Compliance Committee on June 1, 2022. This caused the company to investigate a Nitra assembly plant in Slovakia, Halewood, UK. The PSCC later advanced the issue to the Recall Determination Committee in July. The Recall Determination Committee determined that all of the probable seatbelt pre-tensioners must be inspected and replaced if damaged.
Dealerships will conduct an inspection and replace the driver and front-passenger assemblies starting on September 16. The affected motor vehicles will be split between the 2022 to 2023 model years Land Rover Defender, Discovery Sport, Discovery, Range Rover Velar, and Ranger Rover Sport. 145 Velar and 2,869 Range Rover Sport have been recalled. The 427 Discovery Sport models were recalled. The recalled seatbelt pre-tensioners were manufactured at Autoliv’s Hungary plant.
Instead of waiting for the recall notices by first-class mail, owners may contact Land Rover’s customer service to arrange the repair.
