Backup Camera Accident Lawsuits
According to an online news alert posted on motorillustrated.com, Mercedes-Benz and BMW have initiated a safety recall concerning their backup camera infotainment systems. The recalls concern defective backup cameras, which could cause a severe motor vehicle accident. The defect involved a software-related glitch that requires a software update.
The BMW recall affects its 2022 BMW i4 M50 and iX models. The defect causes obscured warning messages. BMW dealerships will update the affected vehicles’ software at no cost to the customer.
The Mercedes recall affects its S-Class and EQS motor vehicles. The recalled backup cameras require a software update of its infotainment system.
BMW’s recall affects more than 3,000 2022 and 2023 iX electric SUVs and nearly 4,000 i4 electric sedans. The defect is described as being a problem that might prevent some warning messages from appearing correctly on the dashboard. Tests conducted at its manufacturing plant found that certain error messages may not appear on the dashboard after the aforementioned vehicles are placed in valet parking mode. When the braking system fails, a warning message is supposed to be displayed on the vehicle’s dashboard to inform the driver and instruct them to stop the vehicle safely. Should the warning not be displayed properly, the driver might be unaware of a dangerous driving condition until an accident happens.
Mercedes-Benz’s recall is described as a center screen failure to turn on once the doors have been opened. When the rear-view camera doesn’t display properly when an affected vehicle has been shifted into reverse, the driver could be involved in a serious accident. Mercedes-Benz estimates that the recall could impact 8,530 2021 S-Class and 2022 EQS. Another 8,000 2021 S580 sedans have been recalled. 495 S-Class vehicles and 16 EQS models are part of this recall.
