Nissan Pathfinder and Mazda CX-30 Recalled
A news article posted on startsat60.com, a dangerous defect discovered in Australia could result in a similar defect in the U.S., which could increase the risk of accident, injury or death. According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Mazda and Nissan have begun an urgent recall of their SUVs due to a potentially life-threatening defect.
The recall affects about 14,450 Nissan Pathfinders and around 2,660 Mazda CX-30 Astinas. The Nissan recall affects the 2014-2015 models R52 Pathfinders that were sold between September 2013 and January 2017. The Mazda recall affects its 2020 model CX-30 (DM) Astinas that were sold between January 2020 and February 2021.
According to the news report and the statements made by the ACCC, the Nissan Pathfinder’s defect increases the risk of a crash with injury or death to the vehicle occupants or other motorists. The stop lamp relay might stick while in the ‘ON’ position, which can cause the brake lights to remain “on” even when the brakes aren’t being applied. The ACCC states that the defect may also cause the engine to lose power, prevent the vehicle from being shifted out of the “Park” position, or allow the engine to start without needing to depress the brake pedal.
The Mazda’s defect concerns the boot’s power liftgate. It has been reported that the boot shuts unexpectedly when the motor vehicle is parked facing uphill on an incline and in high ambient temperatures. The ACCC stated this defect could increase the chance of injury should the liftgate lower onto a person as they were accessing the boot.
Both Nissan and Mazda are contacting customers. Mazda stated that customers could bring in their vehicles to an authorized dealer for a free inspection and repair after the replacement parts become available in May 2021.
Nissan consumers affected by the recall are advised to call their local Nissan dealer to organize an inspection and repositioning of the stop lamp switch and possible replacement of the stop lamp relay.
