Seatbelt recalls
USA – Businessinsurance.com writes that Takata is subject to another recall regarding vehicle safety concerns. This time, Takata seatbelts are creating safety concerns in the industry. Takata broke the record for vehicle recalls with its highly defective airbags. Tens of millions of vehicles were recalled as a result of the defective airbags, which killed dozens of people worldwide, and injured hundreds.
Now it is possible that millions of vehicles will be under all as a result of the company’s seatbelts. Authorities state that an automotive supplier that overtook Takata after its 2017 bankruptcy has been searching through the company’s testing data regarding many of the company’s products.
Reports state that the company found inaccuracies in the data that suggest it is possible that officials with Takata intentionally altered the numbers. Regulators in Japan told automakers to be prepared for another massive recall.
About 40 percent of vehicles manufactured in Japan used webbing from Takata seatbelts. Three out of ten vehicles internationally also use the product. Prior to the company’s downfall, which is caused by the massive issues with their airbag inflators, the company was one of the largest manufacturers of automobile safety system parts.
It is not yet clear how many vehicles will be subjected to the recall related to the defective seatbelts. However, the incident is concerning considering the severe consequences of the airbag recalls. In 2017, Takata was required to pay a one billion dollar fine following an investigation in the United States. The company filed for bankruptcy just a few months later. The Chinese company that overtook many of Takata’s assets states that they are reviewing data from a 20 year period that suggests issues with Takata seatbelts.
Officials in the United States stated that they are aware of the issues and reviewing the information. The authority stated that if the webbing is not in compliance with the safety standards created by the federal motor vehicle safety regulations or if the seatbelts are a risk to safety, they will take action.
The Takata airbag recall is still impacting many vehicles, and as recently as this year, these defective airbags have killed vehicle occupants. The recall was the largest ever on record related to vehicles and impacted most major car manufacturers.
