QUEENS, N.Y. — A teenager riding his bicycle on a Queens street died horrifically when a dump truck ran him over. The collision killed the young man instantly. According to a news report by ABC 7 New York, the crash occurred in Long Island City on Borden Avenue on a Saturday afternoon. The truck driver was devastated and remained at the scene of the accident. Investigators did not express an intent to charge the driver with any moving violations or criminal offenses at this time. The investigation is not yet complete.
According to PIX 11, the bicycle rider was only 14-years-of-age when he died. The investigation revealed to this point that the dump truck and the bicycle rider were traveling easterly on Borden Avenue. They both traveled easterly until the dump truck started to take a right-hand turn onto 11thStreet. The young teen was trapped under the wheels of the dump truck. He died at the scene of the accident.
Police have not charged the 33-year-old dump truck driver to this point. Witnesses say that he was extremely distraught and despondently crying when he learned he killed a boy accidentally. The man told witnesses that he never saw the boy.
The deadly accident sent aftershocks throughout the Long Island City community. Politicians representing the citizens of that neighborhood exclaimed the need to protect pedestrians and bicycle riders. The boy was at least the 21stbicycle rider to die on New York City streets in 2019, and the second person to die in six months on Borden Avenue. The politicians said they would contact the New York City Police Department and the New York City Department of Transportation to find out more about what the City can do to protect its vulnerable pedestrians and bicycle riders. One local politician said that the only way the carnage will stop is with radical action. He did not specify what actions the City should take.
