Bicycle Rider Sent to Hospital

NORTH AMITYVILLE, Long Island, N.Y. — A bicycle rider sustained severe injuries in a collision with a teenage motorist. According to a report published by the Daily Voice, the bicycle accident happened at the intersection of Walnut Road and New Highway in North Amityville. Witnesses reported the crash around 8:15 p.m. The intersection where the bicycle accident happened is widely reputed to be an extremely dangerous intersection. Suffolk Police investigators did not release the name of the bike rider who was hit. EMS transported the bicyclist to Good Samaritan Hospital located in West Islip for treatment of severe injuries. Police indicated that the operator of the car was a nineteen-year-old female who was driving with two passengers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published a pamphlet discussing issues relating to safe driving for teens. The NHTSA states that distracted driving is one of the foremost causes of teen traffic accidents. The NHTSA reports that using a cellphone, either talking or texting, is a massive distraction. A teen is six times more likely to crash when dialing a phone while driving and 23-times more likely to be involved in an accident when texting and driving.

Teens are also distracted by other influences. Eating, drinking, changing the radio station, create distractions for drivers that can cause accidents.

Having passengers in the vehicle is highly distracting to a teenage driver. The NHTSA determined that the risk of a teen crashing a car is multiplied by the number of passengers in the car. A teen driver who is driving with one teenaged passenger is two-and-one-half times more likely to take a risk than when driving alone.

A chance of becoming involved in a car accident increases dramatically when speeding. The NHTSA obtained statistics that prove 32 percent of fatal crashes in 2016 involved speeding to some degree. Interestingly, research shows that newly licensed teens do not start driving at excessively high speeds until they gain confidence on the roads.
