E-Bike Accident in Long Island City
LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS, NY – A news report posted on patch.com states that an e-bike rider was tragically struck and killed in Long Island City last Monday morning. The victim is the 16th bicyclist to be struck and killed by a motorist in 2021, which makes this year one of the deadliest years since Mayor Bill de Blasio took office in 2014. The report states that a teen driver driving a pickup truck struck the cyclist.
According to the accident report, the collision took place around 7:20 in the morning. The 32-year-old cyclist was riding his bike along Honeywell Street towards Northern Boulevard when the 18-year-old driver suddenly veered into the cyclist from the opposite direction.
The victim was found lying unconscious on the street. He was transported to a local area hospital but tragically passed away. The news report states that this is the third e-bike rider to be run over and killed by a driver in Northwest Queens this year. So far, a total of 206 traffic-related deaths have occurred, and sixteen of those deaths were cyclists.
Danny Harris, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives, a street safety organization, scrutinized the Mayor for reducing lifesaving infrastructure —such as protected bike lanes. The street where the victim was killed had a bike lane with flex-posts in the past. However, the city removed the barriers protecting the bike lane.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the cyclist remained at the accident scene to speak to the police. He was cited for failure to comply with state law by crossing a street marked with double yellow lines. The police stated that no arrests had been made, and the accident investigation is ongoing. The NYPD Highway Patrol Collision Investigation Squad is leading the fatal e-bike accident investigation.
