Bicycle Rider Dies from Severe Head Trauma after Being Hit by an SUV

Fatal bicycle accident

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A 29-year-old man, described as a bicycle enthusiast by his family, died from massive head trauma after he was struck by a 20-year-old man driving a Toyota Highlander. According to the New York Daily News, the man was riding his bike to meet with his father to watch a favorite cable television show Sunday night. New York City police detectives continue to examine the scene for evidence to determine how the accident happened. The investigating detectives have not requested any criminal charges to this point in their inquiry.

NYPD accident investigators say that the 29-year-old cyclist was riding on Avenue U around E. 33rdStreet in the Marine Park neighborhood of Brooklyn when a Toyota Highlander driven by a 20-year-old man struck the cyclist. The accident happened at approximately 8:20 p.m. Investigators say that the passenger’s front quarter of the Highlander hit the bike rider. The impact threw him violently off of the car and onto the ground. The impact inflicted massive head trauma. Medics rushed the man to New York Community Hospital in Midwood. Sadly, the man succumbed to his injuries. Police continue to investigate the fatal crash. They have not released the results of their investigation, and they have not filed for criminal charges against the SUV driver.

The Brooklyn Paper reported that the 29-year-old bicyclist was the eighth bicycle rider killed in Brooklyn in 2019 and the fourth rider died in the southern section of the borough.  Bike South of Brooklyn, a bicycle advocacy group, told the Brooklyn Paper that the lack of bike-only lanes contributed to the man’s death. The group also said that the fourth deaths in southern Brooklyn were “predictable,” and foist the blame on politicians who forgot about the importance of bicycle safety.

More on Brooklyn lawsuits:

Another bicycle riding advocacy group blames the mayor of New York for the carnage on Brooklyn’s roads. They said that the mayor could build bike safety areas that would protect riders from heavy volume of vehicular traffic, like that of the southern part of Brooklyn.
