Fatal bicycle accident on Willis avenue, N.Y.
BRONX, NY – According to an online news report published on StreetsBlog.org, a bicyclist was fatally injured in a pedestrian accident at an intersection in Bronx, New York. The fatal accident is the fifth fatal cyclist accident in 2020. The news reports that the New York Police Department provided some details about the tragic accident.
According to the news article, the cyclist was traveling southbound inside a two-way bicycle lane on Willis Avenue. The accident occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. when the cyclist and a 2013 Lexus collided. The driver of the Lexus, a 62-year-old man, was heading east on East 138th Street. The cyclist received severe injuries to his body and head. The accident appears to be a red light running type of accident. The NYPD would not disclose which individual ran the red light. The driver of the Lexus remained at the scene of the accident and provided a statement to investigators. The cyclist was transported to Lincoln Hospital, and he tragically passed away to the extent of his bodily injuries.
Investigators with the NYPD did not offer and more information regarding the facts and circumstances of the bicycle accident. The NYPD only stated that the accident is an ongoing investigation.
In 2019, there were 23 accidents at this same intersection resulting in one fatality and two people being injured. So far, governmental officials have not addressed this dangerous intersection.
