Fatal bicycle accidents
BROOKLYN AND STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK – According to an online news article published by www.nydailynews.com, two bicyclists were killed in separate accidents involving trucks on the same day.
Two separate accidents involving bicyclists and trucks have resulted in fatal injuries. The first bicycle accident involving a truck happened in Brooklyn when a 58-year-old man was riding his bicycle south on McGuinness Boulevard when he collided with a box truck traveling in the same direction at Norman Avenue. The victim, who has not been identified by police, was transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment but was later pronounced dead.
The second bicycle accident involving a truck happened on Staten Island when a 17-year-old boy riding his bicycle collided with a tow truck at the intersection of Castleton Avenue and Clove Road in Port Richmond. According to witnesses, the 17-year-old bicyclist was launched into the air upon impact with the tow truck. The 17-year-old was transported to Richmond University Medical Center for treatment but was later pronounced dead.
Some reports indicate that with the Staten Island accident, the tow truck had a green light and that the 17-year-old bicyclist “crossed the red light.” A camera from a bus nearby shows that the 17-year-old struck the rear tire of the tow truck. Many people believe that the intersection where the accident happened is dangerous, as there is a nearby school, and that trucks “speed there all the time.”
The New York Police Department is investigating both the Brooklyn and Staten Island accidents. At this time, there are no reports of criminal charges against the drivers of the two trucks involved in the accidents. Whether the truck drivers face criminal charges will be dependent on whether any traffic laws were violated.
