Fatal Bicycle Accident in Upper West Side
UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A news story posted on patch.com reports that a bicyclist was tragically killed in an early morning accident while riding a CitiBike on the West Side Highway. According to police, the cyclist was struck by a Lexus sedan. Police and emergency medical services arrived at the accident scene at around midnight, where they discovered a man who sustained trauma all over his body. Emergency medical services transported the accident victim to Saint Luke’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A preliminary accident investigation ascertained that the bicyclist was operating a CitiBike along West Side Highway’s left lane when the cyclist was hit by Lexus heading in the same direction. The West Side Highway lacks bike lanes. The driver of the Lexus, a 73-year-old man, remained at the accident scene. Police stated that there was no sign of criminal activity, but the driver was arrested and charged with operating the sedan on a suspended license.
The accident is under investigation by law enforcement. There were no further details provided about the driver or the victim.
