BROOKLYN, New York — EMS raced a female bicycle rider to Kings County Hospital in a harrowing attempt to save the woman’s life according to a report appearing on ABC 7 New York. The woman continues to fight for her life after the horrific accident. Few details concerning the accident were released by the New York Police Department after the crash. The police who rapidly responded to the scene of the crash said that witnesses had to prevent the driver of a van from running away immediately after the collision, which happened near Kings Plaza on Flatbush Avenue in the Mill Basin neighborhood of Brooklyn. Video from the scene taken by ABC 7 New York shows the victim’s bicycle crushed beneath the dollar van, near the back axel. There is no update on the medical condition of the victim available. The man was arrested by NYPD officers after the incident
New York City bicycle accidents occur for a variety of reasons. Motorists hit bike riders primarily because they failed to yield the right of way to bicyclists. The unpredictability of motorists plays a huge role as well. Drivers who turn suddenly or fail to use a directional create havoc on the roads for bicycle riders. Vehicle operators can often misjudge the space between their vehicle and the bike rider when passing. Any contact with a rider, even if it is a side view mirror, could have deadly repercussions for a bicycle rider.
Bicycle riders must be cognizant of the dangers that are unique to them. Car doors opening unexpectedly into traffic, dog attacks, potholes, defective roads, poorly maintained roads, and other hazards can force a bike rider to take evasive actions that place them in great danger of getting hit by a motor vehicle.
Bike riders in New York, and elsewhere, must make sure they follow the rules of the road. Not only will following the traffic laws help keep bicyclists safe, following the traffic laws could stop someone from trying to blame the bike rider — which is an all-too-common theme — for the accident.
