Certain Gas-Powered Motorized Bicycles Are Illegal and Unsafe for Pedestrians on New York City’s Public Streets

Gasoline Powered Bicycle Accident Lawsuits
New York City, New York – A news report posted on wnbf.com states that there is a new type of bicycle cruising the streets of NYC that are illegal and pose a serious safety hazard to pedestrians and motorists. The bicycles are fitted with gasoline-powered engines. In the news report, the writer describes an incident where they witness riders on these gas-powered bicycles not obeying traffic laws. For example, the writer witnessed one gas-powered bicycle motorist failing to stop at a red light.
According to the Johnson City Police Department’s Facebook page and this news report, the law enforcement agency issued a public announcement regarding these gas-powered bicycles. The announcement describes these motorized vehicles’ nature as a typical bicycle that has been retrofitted with a gasoline motor that powers the bicycle without the cyclist needing to pedal the bicycle. In addition, the announcement also warned that bicycles were “not designed or equipped” to be able to travel at such unsafe speeds. Because these bicycles do not meet the safety standards, the bikes cannot be legally registered with the New York Department of Motor Vehicles. If a motor vehicle cannot be registered with the NYDOT, the bikes cannot be operated legally on any public streets.
According to the Johnson City Police Department, all cyclists are required to abide by traffic laws in the state of New York. In other words, bicyclists must stop at stop signs, obey traffic lights, observe speed limits, use hand signals, and obey the traffic laws as required by automobiles. Cyclists are also not permitted to lane-split, drive against the flow of traffic, or drive on sidewalks. Also, cyclists should keep in mind that each municipality may have its own local ordinances or bicycle laws in addition to New York State’s bicycle law.
