MANHATTAN, NY – According to a news story on nydailynews.com, the NYPD Highway Patrol is investigating a serious pedestrian accident involving a bicyclist and a car on Delancey Street and Columbia Street in Manhattan, New York City. The car’s driver is accused of running over and critically injuring a Lower East Side pizza delivery worker who was riding his bike. The suspect then allegedly ran away from the accident on foot and now faces several criminal charges.
The suspect, a 22-year-old man, was charged in Manhattan Criminal Court with leaving the scene of an accident, assault, and reckless endangerment in the pedestrian accident that sent a pizza delivery worker to a local hospital. The victim is currently in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
Manhattan prosecutors agreed to allow the defendant to be placed on supervised release pending adjudication of the criminal case due to the defendant’s lack of a criminal record. The defense attorney stated that his client has a young son, is employed, and turned himself in police just 15 minutes after the collision. His attorney stated that the defendant has shown that he will not run from the criminal charges since he turned himself into the police.
Judge Robert Rosenthal stated, “That being the case, I’m going to release you on your own recognizance, sir.”
The NYPD Highway Patrol is currently investigating how and why the accident occurred. So far, the investigation alleges that the defendant was driving his Honda sedan westbound along Delancey Street at around 6:10 p.m. last Monday evening when he struck a cyclist who was pedaling southbound along Columbia Street. The intersection is located underneath a ramp that leads to the Williamsburg Bridge.
The car’s impact with the bicyclist was so severe that the sedan’s front grille was severely damaged, and the windshield was cratered. The defendant is accused of leaving his vehicle and fleeing the accident scene on foot.
The injured bicyclist was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and is listed in critical medical condition. The man’s identity was not released.
