MANHATTAN, NY – A news story posted on boweryboogie.com reports that a hit-and-run driver struck and killed an e-bike delivery cyclist along the Lower East Side. Witnesses stated that two unmarked police cars were in pursuit of the hit-and-run driver. The fatal bicycle accident occurred at approximately 11:00 pm.
The hit-and-run driver was purportedly driving a black Subaru Outback. According to the news report, the victim, a 24-year-old man was riding his e-bike and attempting to cross East Houston Street at Clinton Street. The driver did not stop, as required by New York law, and the victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was declared dead.
According to the report, video of the fatal accident appears to show that the bicyclist had a green light and that the hit-and-run driver veered around stopped vehicles to run through a red light. The driver then struck the victim. After the terrible collision, the driver was witnessed racing away at a high rate of speed with two unmarked police vehicles in pursuit.
There have been no arrests in the case.
According to the Gothamist, there have been over 130 people killed this year in pedestrian accidents. This represents the highest number of deaths in several years.
