A news report published on streetsblog.org states that NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea informed news reporters that he is more frightened of e-bike riders and bicyclists than he is of motor vehicle drivers. The report states that the statement was shocking and opposes what his own law enforcement agency’s statistics documents in terms of the significant number of fatalities caused by truck and car drivers each day and the agency’s commitment to making roadways safer.
The NYPD Commissioner’s comment was in response to a radio reporter asking Mayor de Blasio and Commissioner Shea about the alleged new dangers created by the increasing number of mopeds and electric bikes on New York City’s roadways. According to the report, many people worry that the city’s roadways are less safe, and statistics prove people are less safe. However, as previously stated, the fatal accident statistics prove cars and trucks cause significantly more pedestrian fatalities.
Safety experts believe it is the decrease in NYPD enforcement efforts that have caused the surge in fatalities. Those experts point to a 55% decrease in moving violation citations. According to Commissioner Shea, cyclists, skateboarders, and scooter riders are disobeying all manner of traffic control devices, failing to stop at stop signs, and are traveling in the wrong direction in bike lanes, and this represents a severe danger to pedestrians.
According to accident statistics collected by Transportation Alternatives, this past summer was the deadliest summer in the past several years. Through the month of September, pedestrian accidents took the lives of 199 people in the city.
