NEW YORK CITY, NY – June 15, 2020 – According to NYPD and an online news article posted on nydailynews.com, a father was tragically hit and killed in a pedestrian accident on Park Avenue, between the streets of East 137 and 138. The cyclist was a Mexican immigrant who rode his bike each day to his job at an East Side eatery. The man was worried about contracting the coronavirus from the subway and rode his bicycle each day from South Bronx to his job in Manhattan.
The 38-year-old man was riding his bike on the way home from his job East Side eatery job when he was hit and fatally injured by a Freightliner truck on Park Avenue in Mott Haven, according to law enforcement. The man´s family members stated that their loved one´s death happened at a notoriously dangerous intersection. The victim was married and the father of two children. The man is the second victim to be hit and killed by a vehicle and while bicycling through the Bronx in the past several days. The fatal bicycle accidents happened approximately a half-mile apart on East 138th Street.
According to a New York Police Department spokesperson, the fatalities bring the total of bicyclists killed this year to six.
Police stated that the truck driver was moving around a double-parked motor vehicle when the victim tried to maneuver between the two vehicles and fell beneath the rear wheels of the truck. Law enforcement stated that the victim was pronounced dead at the accident scene, and the truck driver waited for police at the accident scene. No charges have been filed against the driver, and the accident scene investigation is ongoing.
