MANHATTAN, NY – According to Nbcnewyork.com, a cyclist was struck and killed in Midtown at about 5:53 in the morning. The victim was a 72-year-old man.
The police found the victim in the road and unconscious next to his bike at 8th Avenue and 45th Street. The police stated that they believe that the cyclist was hit by a truck, but that the truck failed to stop after hitting the victim.
The victim, Joseph Chiam, was from the East Village. Chiam was transported to the Bellevue Hospital where he was declared dead.
The bicycle appears in video footage of the scene. The bike is badly damaged and mangled.
A witness called 9-1-1 when he saw that the victim was on the road and unable to move. The person who called for help, Jaquone Hopkins-Miller said that when he arrived on the scene, there were people there with their phones out, but no one had made a call to emergency services.
The investigation is still ongoing.
Cyclists and pedestrians are the most common victims of hit-and-run crashes. These individuals are the most vulnerable on the road and vehicles may strike them and flee the scene having only experienced minimal damage. Sadly, the drivers who cause these crashes frequently escape justice. Even as New York City has managed to greatly reduce the number of people killed in traffic crashes across the city, hit-and-run drivers still cause a great deal of property damage, injuries, and deaths. The city is trying to engage the help of the public through early alert systems in the event of hit-and-run crashes.
