MORICHES, NEW YORK – As reported in online news articles published by abc7ny.com and wcbs880.radio.com, two women were tragically killed and one man was seriously injured in two boating accidents off the coast of Long Island.
Two boating accidents off the coast of Long Island claimed the lives of two women and one man. The first boating accident happened off the coast of Baldwin in the Middle Bay waters during the late morning hours when an 18-year-old woman on a jet ski collided with a 35-foot Fountain Motor Boat. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The second boating accident happened in Suffolk County near Cupsogue Beach when a 50-foot Sea Ray collided with a 22-foot boat about two hours before sunset. Local authorities report that the 65-year-old man operating the Sea Ray was intoxicated at the time his boat struck the smaller 22-foot boat.
The occupants of the smaller boat, a married couple, were drifting when the 50-foot boat slammed into them. The husband jumped off the boat and sustained injuries and was transported to Long Island Community Hospital for treatment. His wife was not as lucky. She was thrown from the boat and killed. The Coast Guard pulled the woman from the water but were unable to save her.
The police impounded both boats involved in the Suffolk County accident for safety checks. The 65-year-old man operating the Sea Ray was arrested for being intoxicated while boating, but it is unclear whether he is currently facing criminal charges. Authorities are still investigating both boating accidents. There are no further details on the accidents at this time.
Boating accidents across the country cause serious injuries and even death. These types of accidents involving watercraft have increased over the past decade and have resulted in many fatalities.
