STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — According to silive.com, commuters on the Belt Parkway and Gowanus Expressway experienced tremendous delays during their morning commute on Friday, November 9, 2018. The traffic tie-ups on those two routes created a massive backup onto the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The traffic did not clear for some time.
A high volume of motor vehicles attributed to the congestion on the Belt Parkway as well as the Gowanus Expressway. Additionally, the Staten Island Expressway was moving very slowly from Bradley Avenue easterly around 7:00 a.m. No reasons other than high volume were attributed to the traffic jam.
Elsewhere, the Staten Island Expressway Brooklyn-bound route near Hylan Boulevard was backed up. That back up could have been caused by an accident in the vicinity. There was no word on how many cars were involved or whether there were any injuries.
New York traffic remains the third-worst in the country according to the USA TODAY. The USA TODAY reported on a study conducted by GPS company TomTom. TomTom analysts found that traffic in Los Angeles saw an increase in traffic during rush hour. San Francisco ranked second, and New York ranked third.
Experts say that a thriving economy leads to more cars on the road, especially during rush hour because people are commuting to work. Traffic on the east coast is not quite as bad as traffic on the west coast, but both general geographic areas continue to thrive economically, while other regions of the country such as Denver, Detroit, Las Vegas, and St. Louis, to name a few, saw a decline in commuting traffic.
Infrastructure changes also account for some traffic problems. New construction can result in delays by reducing space in which cars can operate. Additionally, one theory espoused for increased traffic is the number of vehicles driving for Uber and Lyft, respectively.
