MANHATTAN, N.Y. — A New Jersey transit bus carrying 49 passengers crashed into a median as the bus was pulling into the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. NorthJersey.com reports that the incident took place around 6:20 a.m. The bus reportedly jumped the concrete barrier on the median. There were no reports of any medical issues in the commuting incident. There was no further information available about the investigation as to why the bus driver struck the concrete barrier. The cause of the accident involving the transit bus remains under investigation by Port Authority investigators.
Fortunately, none of the commuters making their way to Manhattan on a New Jersey Transit bus suffered any injuries in the pre-dawn crash. Port Authority investigators say that a bus with 49 passengers crashed into a concrete median barrier entering the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. The incident occurred at the entrance to the terminal. The bus was riding on the 139 line from Lakewood. Although no injuries were reported, the collision with the concrete barrier was so substantial that the bus climbed the three-foot tall barrier and became lodged on it.
Emergency personnel flocked to the scene to assist the passengers. A spokesperson from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said that all passengers safely transferred from the bus onto another bus to continue their respective commutes. The Port Authority spokesperson did not speculate as to a cause of the accident. However, NorthJersey.com reported that a passenger on the bus posted a message to his Twitter account with a photo of the bus claiming that an object struck the front window of the bus, forcing the bus driver to hit the barrier. The passenger’s photo shows extensive damage to the right side of the bus window, near the door.
The crash did not result in any delays in the Exclusive Bus Lane, also known as the XBL.
