BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A freak accident in the Flatlands section of Brooklyn involving an MTA bus killed a woman. The woman had stepped off of the bus, but somehow she fell down into the street and the bus ran over her as it pulled away from the curb. MTA officials along with the Highway Accident Investigation Unit of the New York Police Department, opened an investigation into the deadly incident that occurred on a Thursday morning around 9:00 a.m. according to a report filed by ABC 7 News. Medics pronounced the woman deceased at the scene of the accident. The incident remains under investigation with authorities at this time and no criminal charges have been issued.
Preliminary reports from NYPD and MTA officials suggest that the woman who died started acting up while riding on the bus. Witnesses told police that the woman began kicking the bus’s front doors. The bus was moving at the time. The bus driver pulled to the curb near the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and Flatlands, and the doors to the bus opened.
What happened next is the subject of the continuing investigation. Police suspect that the bus was moving when the doors opened. The woman stepped off of the bus toward the sidewalk. The woman fell back into the street, went under the bus, and the rear wheels of the bus rolled over her. Authorities are trying to determine if the doomed woman crashed into a telephone pole located on the sidewalk, which might have caused her to fall backward. Additionally, police are not clear whether the doors of the bus opened while the bus was driving towards or pulling away from the curb. Three people inside the bus were hurt and received treatment at Kings County Hospital.
Authorities said that the bus remained at the scene.
