STATEN ISLAND, NY- SILIVE.com reports that a car accident involving a wedding limousine and another vehicle caused a car to overturn. The crash occurred at about 3:44 p.m. close to the intersection of Amboy and Lindenwood.
The crash injured one person who was transported to the Staten Island University Hospital. The limousine was parked in front of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Archangels Michael and Saint Mena. Witnesses say that a wedding was in progress when the crash took place.
The vehicle that flipped over was a white Lexus sedan. Reports did not state the condition or the identity of the injured person.
Rollover crashes are rare, but when they do occur, they can be devastating. Only three percent of collisions involve rollovers, but rollovers cause 30 percent of rash related deaths.
Any vehicle can flip over, but certain vehicles are more likely to roll. SUVs, pickup trucks and other vehicles that are taller and have a higher center of gravity are more likely to roll. These vehicles often flip when the driver rounds a curve quickly. Cars are far less likely to flip but will in certain situations.
Many rollover-related fatalities could be avoided if everyone wore their seatbelts. In around 50 percent of rollover crashes, a person is ejected either fully or partially from a vehicle. Vehicle ejections are extremely deadly. Only about 25 percent of people ejected from vehicles survive. The best way to avoid being thrown from a rolling vehicle is to use a seatbelt.
Other ways to avoid rollover crashes include checking to make sure the vehicle’s tires are in good shape, and always traveling at an appropriate speed for the road conditions.
