New York City has been focusing on reducing the number of people killed in pedestrian accidents in the city each year. The Vision Zero initiative has the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities altogether. The lofty goal is based on the premise that all traffic accidents are preventable events that can be avoided by careful planning, enforcement of laws, and laws that reduce the risk of severe crashes.
The Vision Zero program has shown success in NYC, especially with its ability to reduce pedestrian fatalities. One way that the city has greatly cut down on the number of people killed in traffic accidents is to lower the city’s speed limit. Pedestrians have much better chances of surviving accidents if cars are traveling at lower speeds. Even a few miles per hour can make a major difference in the chance of people surviving a crash.
Additionally, when vehicles are traveling at lower rates of speed, drivers are better able to avoid crashes in the first place.
While NYC reached its lowest number of traffic fatalities ever recorded last year, the city is still nowhere near zero deaths. Fortunately, advances in technology may prove the ability to help drivers avoid striking pedestrians by automatically breaking when the vehicle is too close to a person. New technology could greatly reduce the number of deaths from traffic accidents and help the city reach its objective.
