Deadly accident on Long Island

HEMPSTEAD, Long Island, N.Y. — A 22-year-old father of two infants is dead, his 21-year-old female passenger is in critical condition, and police apprehended another driver after an argument led to a chase conducted at high speeds. The chase ended when one of the drivers involved in the pursuit slammed into the other car and violently threw that car into a fire hydrant and tree, coming to rest against a building. The incident allegedly transpired early Tuesday morning, according to a report filed by NBC New York. Police continue to investigate the incident.

According to reports filed by Long Island police investigators, an argument grew heated between two people who knew each other. The argument initiated a high-speed chase that started in Valley Stream and came to a violent and tragic end in Hempstead. The chase lasted approximately seven miles. The news report suggested that speeds reached 80 to 100 miles per hour. The news report also said that both operators drove recklessly.

The pursuit ended when an Audi driven by one of the participants in the argument, reported being a man in his 20s, smashed into the rear of a yellow BMW driver by the other male participant in the argument. The collision was so powerful that the BMW went through a fire hydrant, into a tree on the sidewalk, over the sidewalk, and slammed into an adjacent building. Police located the accident scene on Baldwin Avenue and Acacia Avenue. NBC New York reported that the BMW split in half and the Audi came to rest about a block away from where the BMW came to a halt. Surveillance video captured much of the accident in progress.

The man driving the BMW was reportedly declared dead at the scene. His 21-year-old female passenger received emergency treatment on the scene and then was rushed to a local hospital. She is in critical condition. Officers did not say what charges the driver of the Audi may face.
