The HLDI Recommends Integrating Automatic Braking Systems with Backup Cameras to Increase Efficacy

According to cbs17.com, a new solution proposed by the Highway Loss Data Institute involves the integration of automated braking systems with backup cameras. The solution automatically stops a vehicle if the backup camera and sensors detect that the vehicle is about to hit something. Safety advocates believe this integration of the two safety technologies will save lives and save car owners a lot of money in accident repairs and in personal injury lawsuits.
The federal government currently requires auto manufacturers to install backup cameras in all new cars and trucks. However, the Highway Loss Data Institute asserts that the two technologies must be combined for any significant positive impact on “backing up accidents.”
Matt Moore, president of the Highway Loss Data Institute, said most drivers tend to look around as they are backing up. Therefore having an automated braking system to stop the vehicle automatically makes great safety sense. Also, Mr. Moore pointed out that automated braking systems that slow or stop cars to avoid rear-end collisions have been a major success in reducing accidents. Mr. Moore also believes that rear automatic braking systems will be twice as effective as forward-facing systems.
Automatic rear braking systems join rearview cameras with rear radar sensors. The system is optimal for identifying pedestrians as well.
Right now, automatic rear braking systems are still not standard safety equipment, meaning if you would like to have an automatic rear braking system, you would need to pay extra for the optional safety technology.
The Highway Loss Data Institute estimates claims from reverse collision accidents in 2001 to 2017 caused over $8 billion in damage.
