Deadly NYC car crash
NEW YORK, NY – According to Ccenterdispatch.com, a man from Maryland is facing charges following a multiple vehicle collision in Manhattan that killed one individual on Saturday morning, December 29, 2018. The collision took place about one block from the World Trade Center. The driver, a 37-year-old man, lost control of his vehicle while traveling on West Street. The driver’s Audi struck a Honda that then overturned. The Honda then caught fire, and the woman driving it was killed.
The Audi continued and struck two more vehicles and then hit two parked cars that were on the side of the road. Another victim from the crash is reportedly in critical condition.
The driver of the Audi was identified as Sherman Harrison. Police apprehended Harrison as he attempted to flee the scene of the crash, with his dog in tow. Harrison is now being charged with “leaving the scene of an accident and manslaughter.”
Vehicular manslaughter charges are typically filed in cases when a driver caused a fatal crash when he or she was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Most instances will be second-degree manslaughter, which can lead to seven years behind bars. If the driver has a history of previously driving under the influence, killed someone under the age of 15, kills multiple people, or was on a suspended license, the charges may include first-degree vehicular manslaughter, which is a more serious offense and carries a longer prison sentence or up to 15 years.
While drunk driving has become less common over the past few decades, a high number of vehicle-related fatalities are still caused by drivers who are impaired by alcohol.
