Child Injured in Multi-Vehicle Accident in Brooklyn

SUNSET PARK, Brooklyn- Abc7ny.com writes that four individuals sustained injuries following a crash in Sunset Park. The multi-vehicle accident took place on 54^th Street and 4^th Avenue at about 2:30 p.m. earlier this week. The cause of the crash seems to have been a Chevrolet Camaro which drove through a red light and struck a Chrysler minivan.

The Camaro was carrying five teenage girls. A man and a 5-year-old boy were in the minivan. The Camaro also struck a pedestrian who was in the crosswalk at the time of the crash. The pedestrian was identified as a woman in her 40s.

The man and the child in the minivan, the pedestrian, and one of the girls in the Camaro all sustained injuries in the collision. The four injured individuals were transported to NYU Langone Brooklyn for treatment. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening. The pedestrian was the most severely injured.

Another vehicle, a Honda Pilot, also was damaged in the accident.

The girl driving the Camaro remained at the crash site and was ticketed. The police are still investigating the crash.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2,433 teenagers between the ages of sixteen and nineteen died in car crashes in 2016, making driving one of the main causes of accidental death for that age group. Hundreds of thousands of teens are also injured in car crashes each year. Young drivers lack the experience that comes with years behind the wheel which can mean that they are less likely to identify dangerous situations. Distractions create another problem for young drivers, and one of the risk factors identified by the CDC is teens driving in a vehicle with other teenagers.
