Car plunges into Long Island sound
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Authorities in Westchester County raced to the scene of a tragic accident and found a husband and wife, both in their 70s, dead after their car smashed through a barrier and landed in the Long Island Sound. ABC 7 New York reported that law enforcement officers said that the crash occurred around 4:00 p.m. Authorities are still investigating; however, officials believe that the male driver might have experienced a medical problem that forced him to lose control over the vehicle and plunge into the chilly, murky water below.
When first responders arrived at Hudson Park in New Rochelle, they found that a dark sports utility vehicle had crashed through a metal railing and landed in Echo Bay dozens of feet below. Police divers entered the water and found the driver. Divers removed the man from the vehicle and rushed him to a local hospital. Doctors declared the 74-year-old man deceased. The car remained in the water until equipment arrived at the scene to remove the car. Once the car broke the surface of the water, authorities realized that a woman was also in the SUV. She was slumped over. First responders declared that she passed away at the scene of the crash. The woman who died was the 74-year-old wife of the male driver.
Authorities now have two mysteries to solve. They want to know why the SUV bounced off of a concrete wall, spun around, and then drove forward through the metal railing into the Long Island Sound. The second mystery involves police divers. They want to figure out why it took so long to locate the woman trapped in the car. Officials initially stated that the water was very murky, and divers could not see even though the water may have only been ten feet deep. Secondly, officials said that the cluttered vehicle made it difficult to see the woman until the car came up according to NBC New York.
